Hot off their win against Eastern Washington, the DU Women’s Soccer team trekked up to Prentup Field for the penultimate match of the Colorado Cup..

The cup comprised of the six big name Colorado schools (Air Force, CU Boulder, Denver, Northern Colorado, Colorado College and Colorado State). There was no direct elimination, just a table in which every team plays three games and the winner is determined by their final ranking.

The opening goal came in the 28th minute off the head of Colorado’s Marty Puketapu, who tapped in a cross whipped from in from the goal line by Emily Groark.

Shortly after in the 40th minute, Chaynee Kingsbury brought Colorado up to a comfortable 2-0 lead with a hefty lob that just grazed off the fingertips of junior goalkeeper Brittany Wilson (Littleton, Colo.).

Denver began a comeback, however, in the 67th minute when freshman Camryn MacMillan (Littleton, Colo.) capitalized on the rebound of senior Leah Swander’s (Grand Junction, Colo.) shot at Colorado keeper Jalen Tompkins. Sadly, they were not able to make a follow up goal, resulting in a 2-1 loss in what was also the 33rd Colorado Derby.

This marks Denver’s last match of the cup, with their next game this Friday, 8 p.m. MST at UC Riverside, followed by another match at Cal State Fullerton Sunday at 2 p.m. MST.
