If you’re bored of your usual favorites, add some chaos to your stream with “Insatiable” and “The Package.”

Insatiable

Description: A disgraced, dissatisfied civil lawyer-turned-beauty pageant coach takes on a vengeful, bullied teenager as his client and has no idea what he’s about to unleash upon the world.

Average Duration: ~ 45 min

Reaction:

Before- I had no idea what to expect.

After- It was crazy good.

Analysis:

  • Abides by the rule of thirds
  • Shot variation
  • Camera angles from every level
  • Set in Georgia
  • The props are often used as manifestations of the sins that the characters embody.
  • Diegetic lighting preferred
  • Distinct facial expressions
  • Remnants of a soap opera
  • Id driven

Breakdown:

Before debuting on August 10, the Netflix original series was already a source of controversy. When I watched this show, I was not aware of what was being said, and I was honestly shocked when I found out. Linda Holmes, the writer and editor of Monkey See blog, went into excruciating detail about how lazy, dull and insulting she thought it was. In addition to her glowing review, a petition was started to cancel the series before it was even released by a woman named Florence Given. Given created the CANCEL Netflix’s Body-Shaming Series “Insatiable” petition because she claimed that the “series will cause eating disorders, and perpetuate the further objectification of women’s bodies.”

This show hit close to home for me because I have struggled with my weight for a while. Even though I am “skinny” now, I have never felt “skinny.” The main character, Patty, goes through the same thing. This is something you don’t really understand unless you experience it, but “Insatiable” shows you an exaggerated version of what it feels like to have lasting body issues.

I suggest that you form your own opinion and then decide whether or not you will watch “Insatiable.”

The Package

Description: When a group of teenage friends goes on a spring break camping trip, an unfortunate accident sets off a race against time to save their friend’s most prized possession.

Duration: 1 hr 34 min

Reaction:

Before- There is an eggplant emoji as the cover image. I think we all know what that means.

After- I have never seen a movie like this about an eggplant emoji.

Analysis:

  • Desaturated
  • Abides by the rule of thirds
  • Shot variation
  • Nature B-roll
  • Eye-level preferred
  • Forest setting
