NCAA Men’s Golf Selection Show, which aired on May 2 on the Golf Channel, chose DU’s Chris Korte (Senior/ Littleton, Colo.) as a #NCAAGOLF Regional Individual. Korte will get to continue his Pioneer career in the NCAA Regional in Norman, Okla.
“Chris being selected by the NCAA to compete in the regional is a testament to his outstanding season,” Head Coach Erik Billinger said. “Chris had seven top-25 finishes and a 72.57 scoring average this season and was very consistent, and that was with a competitive and challenging schedule this year. The course in Norman will set up well for Chris, and I’m excited to watch him compete for a spot at NCAA Finals. Congrats to Chris, as there is nothing better than post-season collegiate golf.”
Korte helped Pioneer Golf record a runner-up finish at the Summit League Championship on May 1, the highest by the golf squad since winning the team title in the 2014 season.
In the Championship, Pioneer Golf held off North Dakota State for as long as they could before falling in the final two holes, finishing second. DU posted a 1-under 287 as a team during the windy final 18 holes of play.
The Pioneers were led by Jake Kelley (Littleton, Colo.) and Korte, who nearly locked up the title for the Pioneers. Kelley golfed incredibly, going low with a 4-under 68 despite tough wind conditions for a third straight day. His final-round 68 was the low round of the tournament and earned him a spot on the all-tournament team. Kelley finished up his final collegiate tournament tied for fourth.
Korte’s 72.57 scoring average ranks third in the Summit League this year. Korte was recognized by the Summit League this past weekend, being named to the All-Summit League First Team. This was Korte’s third time in his career receiving first-team honors.
Korte is the first DU player to compete in an NCAA Regional since former golfer Petter Mikalsen competed in 2015.
Play for Norman regional site is set to begin on May 14.
