Participating at NCAA Regionals at the University of New Mexico Championship Course, the DU women’s golf team finished in 12th place in the 18-team field to round out their 2016-17 season on May 8-10. The team shot a collective 903 over three days of play (305, 300, 298) on the par 72 course.
Senior Jessica Carty (Holywood, Northern Ireland) tallied three birdies in the final day of the tournament. Her two bogeys saw her fall one under par for the day at 71. Overall on the weekend, she finished a team-best five over par.
Also competing in her last outing for the Pioneers was senior Mariell Bruun (Larvik, Norway). She would finish with an overall score of eight over par. Her best round came on the second day of the tournament, where Bruun recorded an eagle, three birdies, five bogeys and one double-bogey to finish the round at two over par.
Junior Jessica Dreesbeimdieke (Windhoek, Namibia) also had a successful tournament, finishing at 12 over par. Closing out strong, her third round score of three over par was her best of the weekend. She recorded two birdies and five bogeys on the day.
As a team, DU’s best round fell on the final day, where they earned a 10 over par score, 298, which left the team sitting at 903 overall. The winner of the tournament, Stanford University, recorded an 866, or two over par.
The Pioneers, who also won their fourth consecutive Summit League Women’s Golf Championship on April 25, will look to build off of a successful 2016-17 campaign for next season. While the talented duo of Bruun and Carty will graduate, it will open up more opportunity for the next wave of women’s golfers at DU to leave their mark on the proud program.
