A Valentine’s Day staple is cuddling up with a date and watching a movie. Whether hitting the theaters to catch a new release or curling up on the couch with Netflix, here are the movies to watch on every kind of date.
Rom-Com with a Twist: “Tumbledown” (2016)
This new indie romantic comedy stars Rebecca Hall (“Iron Man 3”) as the guarded widow of a folk singer and Jason Sudeikis (“We’re the Millers”) as a New York reporter who brazenly comes into her life to write about his death. Wittier than a simple cheesy romance, “Tumbledown” is a good option for couples who want some substance to their date night flick. While it has a limited release, the movie will be showing at the Sie FilmCenter.
‘90s Classic: “Sleepless in Seattle” (1993)
An oldie but a goodie, “Sleepless in Seattle” is a classic romance movie starring Tom Hanks (“Bridge of Spies”) as Sam and Meg Ryan (“Ithaca”) as Annie. After hearing his call to a radio show, Annie writes a letter to Sam asking him to meet her at the Empire State Building on Valentine’s Day. This is perfect for a date tinged with warm nostalgia.
Netflix and Chill: “Hitch” (2005)
Will Smith (“Concussion”) stars in this fun, carefree romantic comedy about a relationship expert, the “Date Doctor,” who finds himself dealing with his own romantic conundrum. It’s conveniently on Netflix for those who prefer a cozy night in and is predictable enough that paying close attention isn’t necessary.
