Both freshman Julia O’Loughlin (Highland Beach, Florida) and sophomore Sonja Rodosevic (Miami, Florida) picked up singles wins, but the no. 64 women’s tennis team (2-3) fell to no. 63 University of New Mexico 4-3 on Feb. 14 in the Colorado Athletic Club.

Despite the loss, doubles play proved to be a strong suit once again. The Pioneers picked up their third straight doubles point of the season when Radosevic and junior Evy Van Genechten (Antwerp, Belgium) won 6-1, and sophomore Morgan Barnhill (Austin, Texas) and senior Michelle Garpenlov (Tyreso, Sweden) winning the match 7-5.

Van Genechten took New Mexico’s Meredith Hopson to three sets, but was unable to get the singles win, falling 6-7, 6-1, 6-7. Denver sophomore Maureen Slattery (Newport News, Virginia) faced similar heartbreak in singles play, losing 5-7, 6-7 in straight sets.

Previously, Denver defeated the University of Wyoming 4-3, handing the Cowgirls their second loss at home in two years. Underclass duo of Slattery and O’Loughlin went undefeated, claiming doubles and individual singles victories.

The Pioneers were unable to pick up a match win during the 2015 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Kick-Off weekend from Jan. 23 to Jan. 25, falling to both the University of South California and Wichita State University by a score of 4-0.

The Pioneers will remain in Denver to play the University of Nevada on Feb. 20.
