On Feb. 3 at 10 p.m. the Department of Campus Safety (DCS) received a report that a female was forcibly fondled near the intersection of E. Iliff Ave. and S. York St.
According to an alert released by DCS, the female was walking westbound on E. Iliff Ave. when she was approached by a white male who grabbed her arm and fondled her genitals. The female was able to push the suspect away and flee the area. The suspect then ran southbound on S. York St.
DCS Community Partnerships and Training Coordinator Sergeant James Johnston said the suspect is a 5’ 7” white male in his early 20’s with brown hair and approximately 170lbs.
Both DPD and DCS are working together on this issue.
“Our campus safety officers are highly trained professionals and we are partnering with the Denver Police on this issue,” said Johnston.
DCS also works closely with DPD in crime prevention at DU.
“The Division of Campus Safety has an extremely close relationship with DPD in all aspects of crime prevention on and around campus.”
Johnston said the incident will be investigated by the Office of Equal Opportunity, which is responsible for ensuring compliance with the University’s anti-discrimination policies and promotes full compliance with all federal, state, and local discrimination laws.
The victim is never at fault in these types of crimes.
“These crimes are acts of violence and are never the victim’s fault,” said Johnston. “You cannot prevent the actions of others.”
DCS works hard to prevent incidents from happening. Students are encouraged to utilize some of the following resources.
Johnston said DCS offers foot escorts to all members of the DU Community 24/7. If you need an escort, call 303-871-2334. Campus safety also offers 1.5 hour self-defense classes free of charge which now incorporate the issuance of a self-defense tool.
Johnston also urges community members to walk in pairs or groups and stay in well-lit areas. Any and all suspicious activity should immediately be reported to Campus Safety at 303-871-3000.
