Everyone’s favorite English nobility, along with their servants, are back.

The fifth season of Downton Abbey premiered on PBS on Jan. 4 with the new season promising at least as much intrigue and drama as the last four. However, change seems to be the theme this season. Released promos have been narrated by the Crawleys’ beleaguered butler Carson discussing “a shaking of the ground” at Downton.

Last season ended on a surprisingly happy note for the show, in which no great personal tragedy or death occurred to anyone in the family. Duchess Cora’s American family visited, causing entertaining friction between many characters as the episode centered on Lady Rose MacClare’s coming-out party. However, there were of course emotional issues, especially for Lady Edith Crawley. Nonetheless, the fourth season finale seemed to tie up all loose ends and set up for some new opportunities, both romantic and otherwise.

This season has started in a relatively calm manner, at least for this show. The fourth season ended in summer of 1923 with Season 5 picking up in early 1924. Both political and social changes have been causing friction—and changing the lives of—numerous characters. And, as is the case with most seasons of Downton Abbey, multiple romantic storylines began and will most likely continue throughout the rest of the season.

The first two episodes of the season mostly focused on continuing Edith’s struggles, though there is also a side plot focused on the firing of a certain member of the Downton staff.

One storyline also focuses on Lady Cora Crowley, something that has not happened in a while, so it should be interesting to see how that plays out during the rest of the season.

While the first two episodes have not yet dropped any bombs, viewers can be assured that the drama will pick up soon, with storylines most likely centering on Edith and Mary. It will be interesting to see how the show handles the even greater changes that occur to the world, as well as how it handles the conflict that has been occurring in Edith’s life since the last season.
