2014 was a fantastic year for music; we saw some impressive festival lineups, Christine McVie played with Fleetwood Mac again, and Daft Punk won “Record of the Year” at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards for their hit song “Get Lucky.”
This year, however, certain artists are bound to stand out from the rest. 2015 will be monumental for some musicians, including Chicago-based garage rock band “The Boxers,” glam indie pop artist “King Tuff,” groundbreaking R&B artist “Blood Orange,” and spirited folk-pop group “The Mowgli’s.”
The Boxers
Garage rock can sometimes seem generic, but The Boxers are anything but common; get ready for them to fight their way to the top. The Boxers released some live recorded songs on their BandCamp page last year, and played a successful smattering of shows in the Chicago area. Fueled by support from other Chicago bands, like rising “Twin Peaks” and “Sister Crystals,” The Boxers have the backing and talent to make some giant leaps in their career. Check out their new video for “Mortician” and be sure to listen to their debut full-length album, “The Blue Pool,” on February 28. The Boxers plans to announce a show in Denver, so keep an eye on the band’s Facebook and Twitter.

King Tuff
Armed with glam indie pop, King Tuff is sure to take the cake in 2015. “Black Moon Spell,” his third album debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Heatseeker “Hot Shot Debut” category in 2014. The album attracted positive reviews from various magazines, such as “NME” and “Consequence of Sound.” Backed by his successful album release and rock’n’roll attitude, King Tuff started off his tour in El Paso, Texas, and is slated to play 27 other dates. Catch him at the Larimer Lounge on January 27 and bring your friends. This show is going to kick off an incredible year for music. Follow the man on Twitter to stay in the know.
Blood Orange
R&B/chillwave isn’t a genre most people hear everyday (think FKA Twigs or Solange Knowles), but Blood Orange does it extremely well. Dev Hynes, the mastermind behind Blood Orange, has also released work under the name “Lightspeed Champion,” but is focusing on Blood Orange as his main project. Last year, he played an impressive amount of shows, ranging from solo shows to performances at Coachella. His last album release (“Cupid Deluxe”) was in 2013, so cross your fingers for some new music. With his growing popularity, it’s safe to say he’s going to be up to big things this year.
The Mowgli’s
Despite the grammatical error, everything about The Mowgli’s pop folk sound feels exactly right. 2014 held some big moments for the band, including Wakarusa and Firefly Festival performances, a headlining tour and a supporting spot on the Honda Civic tour. Their new LP is coming out this spring, but until then, listen to their new single “Through the Dark” to get your fix of their free love demeanor. You’ll be forking over the money to see them at the Marquis this April Fool’s Day, guaranteed. Buy tickets at www.themarquistheatre.com.
