With Hallo-weekend coming to a close and Week 9 beginning–which, let’s face it, is probably scarier than some of the costumes you saw–I find it hard to get into the study mood. One helpful thing I do when I study is listen to music–specifically songs that create a relaxed atmosphere. Although some people find it distracting, I feel the right song can really get you focused.

One artist, Lo-Fang, who I’m surprised I’ve never talked about, has a song called “#88.” It begins with plucking strings and a subtle beat that makes you think it’s a contemporary orchestral piece. Then, electronic swells pick up, and you know it’s not some simple classical song. As Lo-Fang’s voice enters, you can hear the soft, calming tone of his vocals. He doesn’t have a very strong voice, but the smoothness in it really shines through. This talented vocalist is also a well-versed musician. He plays cello, violin, guitar and many other instruments in all of his songs, and you can see his musical ability in the video of his live performance of “#88” below.

Glass Animals have a song titled “Gooey” that will get you in a chill, relaxed mood. There are beats that sound like small drips of water and a background of synth that feels celestial. “You just wanna know those peanut butter vibes,” the lead singer whispers, transporting the song into a chorus full of those same dripping beats and some newly haunting drones. This song is partnered with an eclectic music video. It must be this sort of alchemy in the video that make “those peanut butter vibes.” Believe me, it’s too weird not to watch.

“You’re the Best” is a song by a group I recently found, called Wet. It begins with a robotic chant by the lead singer that builds to the laid-back guitar, making the vibe quite relaxing. The song doesn’t build very much; it stays mainly in the same place throughout, but that is definitely not a negative. It’s that simple structure that won’t distract you but can create a relaxed musical atmosphere, perfect for a night of studying.

Next is Chet Faker’s cover of the classic “No Diggity.” This traditionally heavy hip-hop song was turned into a laid-back, chill jam that is hugely different from the original. Chet’s voice sounds raw and relaxed, and the piano has an easy tune that adds to this already calm ballad. It has a stress-free vibe that will definitely transfer into your mood.

On the opposite side of the spectrum is “Tucan” by Kids of 88. It’s an upbeat song that has an underlying tribal beat with ethereal vocals over top. “I wanna go to a place that I know is real/I need to find a new place for my mind to heal,” is sung over angelic drones as well as the tribal, clapping rhythms. The contrasting eccentric rhythm, delicate hums and holistic lyrics that fill this song fill you with a sense of calm that is perfect to de-stress and get you ready for finals.

These are some easy-listening jams that can create a great studying atmosphere for you. Even if you’re not studying, and you just want to relax and have a chill night, these songs will certainly get you in the mood.
