After finishing in fourth place out of the eight teams in the Summit League 2013-2014 season, DU’s men’s basketball team is aspiring for even greater results this upcoming season. Recently tabbed to finish second in their conference, the upcoming year provides ample opportunity for growth and success for a hungry Pioneer squad.
The team features only two seniors, including guards Cam Griffin and Brett Olson. Olson was recently named Summit League Preseason Player of the Year after his prior performances last season. This recognition comes after averaging 14.5 points, 3.5 assists, and 3.4 rebounds and being named to the All-Summit League First Team in his junior season.
Other returning starters include forwards Jalen Love and Bryant Rucker. From Kansas and Texas respectively, these players will be relied upon to provide leadership and improved play for the squad.
“Like any team, our goal is to win a conference championship and go to the [NCAA] tournament. But we also each have goals with each other to perform at our best individually. If that means going a little bit harder in practice or working out extra on our own, we expect that out of one another,” redshirt freshman Dorian Butler said.
With the dawn of a new season comes a new crop of freshmen as well. Committed to play this upcoming year are Daniel Amigo, Cam Delaney, Christian Mackey and Jake Pemberton.
“They all bring something different to the table. Size, strength, speed and skill. [I am excited for] All four of those components,” said Butler in regards to the freshmen.
It is unclear who, if anyone, will be redshirted before the season commences. Viewed as taking a year off, redshirting is actually an intensive and critical process.
Redshirting allows a player to focus on their own skills while not having the pressure to produce in games. They can grow into their bodies and work on their weaknesses while preparing for game action later on in their careers.
“I think the redshirting has definitely molded me into a better player. [It] gave me a chance to learn offense and get stronger and faster,” said Butler.
Rounding out Denver’s roster are redshirt freshmen Duke Douglas, sophomore Josiah Dunn, redshirt junior Marcus Byrd and Pioneer junior Nate Engesser.
This group of players will hopefully strengthen throughout the season, whether through scoring or good defense.
“I think my role is going to be, being a concrete guy who can give you solid minutes. Maybe not scoring a bunch, but getting rebounds and blocking a shot here and there, while providing good defense. Just whatever I need to do to be contribute to the team,” said Butler.
With a solidified, team-oriented mindset, the Denver Pioneers have a bench that can come into games and compete with talent.
This group’s secondary scoring, effective defense and hustle will undoubtedly play a major role in Denver’s quest of making the NCAA National Tournament.
DU basketball will kick off its year on Nov. 16 at home against Idaho State.
