DU’s women’s volleyball team hosted South Dakota State University last Friday, Oct. 24 in Hamilton Gymnasium.

This match was the annual “Dig Pink” match, during which Denver fans and players wore pink in support of breast cancer research and awareness. Donations were also made by the team and community toward the cause.

The Pioneers won the game in three straight sets, improving their record to 19-4 overall and 8-1 in Summit League conference play.

Experimenting with some new lineups, the team took time to adjust and figure out new chemistry. But, once the first set had come and gone, the team looked stable once again and defeated South Dakota State rather handily, winning 3-1.

During the next game, DU downed their opponents by a score of 25-11, before finally crushing the the Jackrabbits in the third set with a 25-15 effort.

In the final game, DU jumped out to a 16-6 lead and didn’t look back en-route to their win.

Sophomore Nola Basey led the team with a solid 15 kills that helped spur the win. Senior Bailey Karst chipped in an impressive 35 assists, while fellow senior Erica Denny paced the team with five blocks. Another senior, Kate Acker, led the team with 14 digs and contributed two aces to help the team attain victory.

It was a complete team effort and showed why the Pioneers are having such a successful season so far.

Denver will travel to Omaha to face Nebraska-Omaha on Halloween, Oct. 31 at 6 p.m.
