A lot of the music I’ve talked about has been mostly solo acts and not groups, but I make an exception for only a few bands, Fall Out Boy being one of them. They are the earliest musical group I remember getting into. My love of this band started with their second album, From Under The Cork Tree, and has been going strong ever since.

Fall Out Boy dropped “Centuries” in the middle of the night on September 8, and I was pleasantly surprised. Although they used a lot of marketing for their new single, it came as a shock to me that this single was dropped. This song is amazing. It’s an empowering, rebellious rock song that is one of the best Fall Out Boy songs to date. After a very long hiatus and an unexpected return in 2013 with Save Rock And Roll, I’m happy to see one of my favorite bands continue to make music. Especially when the music is this good, “you will remember me for centuries,” Patrick Stump, the lead singer, roars, clearing a spot for them in rock history.

So, I thought in honor of one of my favorite bands releasing new music, I decided to reminisce on all the Fall Out Boy songs I love. I think the first song I heard from Fall Out Boy was “A Little Less Sixteen Candles, A Little More Touch Me.” That song was a punk rock anthem for my generation. It has the classic distorted guitar and moving bass, and what punk song wouldn’t be complete without lyrics that are full of angst? This is where my admiration of this band started, and it just got better and better.

Each album was on a whole other level. It was always something different but still held onto their punk rock roots. “Thnks fr th Mmrs,” which is the actual title (“Thanks For The Memories,” to be exact), begins with a dramatic orchestral opening and then builds to their rock style. It’s a fun song that is actually about loving someone so much and being jealous of them that you just want to cut them up into pieces and eat them. I’m not kidding, there is actually a quote of Pete Wentz, the bassist, saying that’s what the song is about. They have a lot of fun in the music video by bringing in monkeys and the odd cameo of Kim Kardashian. It’s an energetic video that pokes fun at all the ridiculous music video directors.

My favorite pre-hiatus album was Folie a Deux, and the song “What A Catch, Donnie,” one of the slower songs off the album that has more of a jazz-rock feel to it and unfortunately, felt like a goodbye. The bridge features famous lyrics from other Fall Out Boy songs, making this song into a remembrance of all the amazing music theyhave made. It seemed like an end to Fall Out Boy, it was bittersweet but luckily it wasn’t exactly the end.

In 2013 they returned with one of the best rock albums I’ve ever heard, accurately titled, Save Rock And Roll. This album was on a whole new level from their previous work. It made them into more of a rock group than the emo-punk group everyone expected them to be, while still keeping a punk vibe of course. The actual song “Save Rock and Roll,” is probably the best song on the album. I mean it features Elton John, what else could you really ask for? It’s a hard-hitting ballad, that’s full of depth and emotion. “You are what you love, not who loves you,” is the lyric that really stuck with me. It’s a beautiful song and made their comeback all the more wonderful.

I was so excited to hear that Fall Out Boy was making new music, and even more excited to hear the amazing single that came out of it. “Centuries” gives me high hopes for an even better Fall Out Boy. I’m hoping they stick to what they’re doing with the transition to rock, because I think it’s going really well for them, as long as they still have the punk feel too. This single left me wanting more music from them, so I hope we will hear more before the end of the year.
