There’s something in the air. Wait, no. There’s nothing in the air. It’s spring, which means the skies are clear, and the mountains are still calling. Winter seems to be completed, yet there is so much to look forward to over the next couple months in the Rockies. Last Thursday’s unexpected snowstorm combined with tons of upcoming events means this spring will be one for the books.

Breckenridge Extended Season: Sunday, April 20 to Sunday, April 27
Breckenridge is extending their season! Colorado had an incredible winter that has allowed the mountain to operate a week later than planned. Keystone and Vail, however, still plan on closing April 20.

5 Chair, Breckenridge: 5 ‘til 5 Every Friday
The 5 Chair (two-person chair next to the terrain park) will be running until 5 p.m. every Friday for the rest of Breck’s season. Free hot dogs will be given out in the park starting at 2 p.m. and “jam style contests” will take place for various prizes such as, GoPros and next year’s season passes.

The Great Race 2.0 (presented by Red Bull): Sunday, April 13 at 1 p.m.
Leave it up to Red Bull to host the craziest spring event of all. 35 teams of two people will embark on a wild race through an on-mountain obstacle course at Vail’s Golden Peak base. Registration is free and takes place the day of the event at the Mountain Plaza at 10 a.m. or Golden Peak from 12 – 1 p.m.

World Pond Skimming Championships (presented by Red Bull): Sunday, April 20 at 3 p.m.

Pond skimming is a long-lasting tradition at ski resorts worldwide, and this competition at Golden Peak, Vail is no exception. The idea is that one simply skis or boards over a pond, but it’s not actually that simple, making it quite comical. A maximum of 75 participants can register (which is done online), and it’s $75, but simply viewing the event for free is a great time too. Next year’s Epic Pass and pair of Liberty Skis will go out to one male and one female.

Easter Egg Hunt: Sunday, April 20 at 8:30 a.m.

Spend Easter slushing around for eggs at Breckenridge. The mountain will be covered in 8,000 of them that can be exchanged for baked treats, candy bags or big (still unannounced) prizes.

Keystone Slush Cup: Sunday, April 20th at 10:30 a.m.

On closing day, Keystone will put on their annual pond skim at the Mountain HOuse Base Area. Get out there to spectate or get to registration at the Mountain House Base Area at 8:30 a.m. with $30. Three of next year’s Summit Passes are up for grabs.

13th Annual Festival of the Brewpubs: Sunday, May 25

The details for this event still haven’t been released, but one thing that’s for sure is that good times will be had amongst great beer samples. White Water Ramble, a bluegrass band from Colorado, will also be playing at the Base Area of Arapahoe Basin from 1 – 4 p.m.

The snow may be melting, but beneath Colorado’s long winter were all of these great events waiting to happen. Free concerts, pond skims, an egg hunt, a race and a brew fest are all up for the taking. It won’t be long before the hot summer attacks Colorado in its usual fashion, so have fun in the slush before it’s all gone.
