Pioneer hockey dropped back-to-back games against Alaska Anchorage and Alaska this past weekend, both by 3-2 overtime decisions at the Alaska Fairbanks Tournament.

The two losses follow a two-game sweep of Merrimack the previous weekend, and drop the team to 2-2-0 overall.

Senior goalie Sam Brittain played almost 200 minutes without giving up a goal, a streak dating back to last season. His streak was snapped on Friday night against Alaska.

It was a story of two games. On Friday, the Pios jumped out to a 2-0 lead over Alaska, thanks to a first period goal by junior Josiah Didier in the first frame, followed by freshman forward Matt Marcinew’s high glove-side shot in the second. The Pioneers did not score again, and Alaska tallied three unanswered goals, the last of which came with less than 30 seconds left in overtime.

Saturday’s contest against Alaska Anchorage was a back-and-forth affair. The Seawolves went up early in the first period, only to have the Pioneers even the score at 1-1 in the second period. Junior Joey LaLeggia gave the Pioneers the lead almost four minutes into the third. The Pios had multiple chances throughout the third to extend the lead, but failed to do so, and eventually fell in overtime after an Anchorage goal with 1:15 left.

This upcoming weekend includes games against Niagara, which has never beat DU in three total meetings and a Canisius team that has never faced the Pios in hockey.
