When Andy Blair graduated with a masters in international security from The Josef Korbel School of International Studies in March 2012, he encountered a common problem: finding an entry-level job.

This challenge inspired Blair to create a job search engine, majoredin.com, specifically for college students and recent college graduates.

To create the website, he partnered with Nick Meves, a friend of Blair’s from when he studied political science at the University of California, Los Angeles for his undergraduate degree. Meves created the website while Blair focused on advertising on the website.

“I made this website for students,” said Blair. “It can help students just starting college figure out what they want to major in by letting them see what kind of jobs they can get. Then it can help students find internships based on their major. Finally, it can help recent college graduates find entry-level jobs.”

A year after Blair came up with the idea for the website, Majoredin launched on April 13. Students are prompted to type in their major and then they have the option to put in the name of a company they want to work for. They are then directed to a list of all relevant jobs, where they can further narrow their search by distance, job type (full time, part time and internship) and locations.

When Blair began looking for jobs out of college, many were posted as entry-level positions but required years of experience.

“I want this website to be a tool for students trying to enter the workforce or who are trying to get an internship,” he said.

The website allows students to search for potential jobs based on their major.

“A lot of the current majors that we have are common at DU and UCLA because that is where I got my education from,” he said. “We also incorporated some fun ones like Greek life and NCAA sports.”

By Greek Life and NCAA sports, Blair is referring to job and internship opportunities available in those fields to students and recent graduates.

Major options include traditional majors along with more unique ones. Some examples are history, jazz studies and chemistry.

Majoredin features job postings from simplyhired.com, another job search engine.

“They have open software that allows people like me to develop different websites,” he said. “We take what they have but put a filter on it so all jobs are entry level positions or internships.”

Meves came up with the name majoredin.com because a common question asked in college is: “What is your major?,” according to Blair.

“Your major tells a lot about who you are,” he said. “It seemed like a good name for our website.”

Since it launched, the website has had positive feedback.

“People have had a lot of good things to say about it so far,” he said. “Some older people have told me that they wish this was around when they were younger.”
