The Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (AHSS) will hold their first Alumni Achievement Award program this May to recognize former DU AHSS students, according to Kristin Altman, director of Community Relations and Communication for AHSS.
“The first annual Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Alumni Achievement Award program is a new tradition at DU in recognizing the personal, professional and community service accomplishments of our liberal arts alumni,” said Altman.
The Awards will be broken up into four categories: the Young AHSS Alumni Achievement Award, the Community Engagement Award, the Alumni Service to DU Award and the Lifetime AHSS Alumni Achievement Award. Depending on the different categories, each should have made “creative or original accomplishments,” be a leader in their field and should have done something to serve the community.
“We hope that we inspire current liberal arts students by showcasing the success stories of our alumni,” said Altman.
According to their website, the selection committee will be made up of AHSS Advisory Board representatives and the dean. Undergraduate and graduate alumni can both be nominated.
Alumnus Ian Mohr, who serves on the AHSS Advisory Board and helped create the program, said it’s important to recognize the accomplishments of AHSS alumni.
“It was important to us that the awards include a multigenerational range of DU alums — from students who’ve graduated within the last 15 years to those worthy of a lifetime achievement honor,” said Mohr. “The awards can also help engage alumni because they can participate in the nomination process, and the awards help us all be more aware of the exceptional things former students of AHSS programs are doing today.”
According to Mohr, AHSS Dean Anne McCall “spearheaded” the creation of the awards program.
“It’s a great opportunity to honor people who honor us every day,” said McCall.
Nominations are being accepted until Monday, March 4 at 11:59 p.m. Anyone can nominate on the AHSS Alumni Awards web page. According to Altman, nominations must be completed fully or they will not be considered. Winners will be notified by email on Friday, March. 15; awards will be given on on Monday, May 6 at the AHSS Alumni Reception and Livingston Lecture in Davis Auditorium. Winners will receive a plaque.
