Two Pioneers nab first WAC awards
Women’s soccer seniors forward Kaitlin Bast and goalkeeper Lara Campbell were named Western Athletic Conference offensive player and goalkeeper of the week, respectively, for their first WAC awards of the season, announced yesterday.
Bast tallied four points in Denver’s 4-0 win over San Jose State on Friday. Bast assisted Kristen Hamilton in her goal to give DU a two-goal cushion in the WAC opener, then Bast’s goal gave Denver a three-goal lead. She assisted on the fourth goal of the game, as well.
After the weekend, Bast sits in fifth place in Pioneer history in career points, with 88, and is tied for fifth in goals, with 34.
Campbell racked up 172 shutout minutes last weekend, leading Denver to two shutout games alongside Maria Kahn in the San Jose State game. Campbell is also the winningest goalkeeper in school history with 54 career wins.
After the weekend, Bast and Campbell are part of the fifth-winningest senior class in the nation.
Alpine skier recognized in Ski Racing Magazine
Senior alpine skier Lindsay Cone was featured in the most recent issue of Ski Racing Magazine.
Cone’s skiing talent, combined with her presence on both the DU alpine skiing team and the women’s golf team, landed her in a feature in the magazine called “Two-Trick Ponies” alongside Dartmouth skier and sailor Trace Smith.
Cone missed last season due to injury, but earned First-Team All-American honors in 2010 and 2011. Cone also competed on the DU women’s golf team during her sophomore and junior years.
