Famous Boulder-based sandwich joint Snarf’s Sub Shop opened its DU location in April at 1729 E. Evans Ave. (formerly Trompeau’s Bakery). The shop offers late-night sandwiches and drinks for those seeking sustenance as the night winds down.

The vibe is relaxed, and Snarf’s has obviously had a strong opening; it’s crowded with DU students as well as other Denverites. An inviting, open and retro environment, Snarf’s is as equally equipped for late-night eating as between class chow-downs.

With good prices and amazing food, Snarf’s is sure to give Jimmy John’s and Subway a run for their money in the coming months.

Short of the lightning delivery services of Jimmy John’s, Snarf’s has the best combination of food, price and atmosphere. It also helps that the Snarf’s crew is friendly, funny and helpful.

Snarf’s sandwiches come in three standard sizes: the Novice is a 5-inch sandwich for $5.50, the Snarf’s is a 7-inch for $7.25 or the Pro –  a whole 12-inches of crispy goodness – for only $10.50.

Snarf’s offers an array of creative variations on the classic sandwiches, including the amazing cheesy goodness of the Turkey and Swiss, Roast Beef and Provolone and the prevailingly popular Chicken Salad and Provolone.

The true magic of Snarf’s, though, is in the bread.

The bread is not fully baked until you order your sandwich, resulting in a crispy bread that is still soft on the inside. Snarf’s has geniously eliminated the cut-up-roofs-of-mouths dilemma of toasted sandwiches with one fell swoop.

Along with speciality sandwiches such as the Artichoke, Feta and Provolone sandwich, which range from $8.40 for a 7-inch Snarf’s sandwich to $11.25 for the Pro 12-inch, the DU location is also one of the few Snarf’s that offers cheap breakfast options.

Ranging from about $3.50 to $6, the breakfast menu includes lox and cream cheese, eggs and cheese and the Three Little Pigs: sausage, bacon, ham, egg and cheese.

Blaring southern funk and rock, Snarf’s boasts a full bar with daily specials, several ’60s style booths and two large garage doors that let in the summer air.

A fire pit out back also promises good conversation, cigarette butts and drinks with friends.

Bright blue, purple and green walls accentuate the exposed piping on the ceiling inside, and the retro dCB)cor makes Snarf’s an eclectic and eccentric place to enjoy a warm sandwich.

Snarf’s boasts a full bar with wine on tap and stays open until 2 a.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

They have $2 pints of PBR and Coors Light, as well as $2.50 drinks during daily happy hour from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. to midnight.

On the same block as The Stadium Inn and across the street from Illegal Pete’s, Snarf’s is sure to be the new late-night hang out for DU students.
