Comedy takes the cake again. Modern Family shines in this week’s episode: Haley (Sarah Hyland) and Claire (Julie Bowen) are helped by the support and love of the family as Haley waits on college letters and Claire hopes to become a member of the city council, campaigning for a new stop sign in her neighborhood. These two storylines come to a head at the same time, culminating in an amusing fashion.
While Haley receives rejection letter after rejection letter, the family runs around town campaigning, with the message “Claire for City Councilwoman.” Mitchell and Cam take car duty, but soon find the powers of the megaphone too tempting to resist abusing. Gloria, Alex, Manny and Luke are put on the phones, making calls and taking donations, but without much luck. Jay simply tries to put in his vote, but runs into an old one-night stand, Dottie, who is running his polling station. Phil agrees to drive senior citizens to the polls to vote, but his first customer has some other errands to run.
Fumbling and tripping, frustrated and distracted, their individual personalities take precedence over being a unified front for Claire’s campaign. Gloria becomes angry when no one donates on her line, primarily because, as Alex says, the donors can’t see her. Forgetting the megaphone is switched on, Mitchell and Cam gossip loudly about an old friend whom they end up having to console. And yet, despite all these blunders, when Claire comes home and thanks them all for their hard work (while they sheepishly look away, feeling guilty), the group shows it is indeed a united front as she receives the results of the votes.
Amidst all the crazy, and no matter what the outcome, the Pritchetts and Dunphys prove what it means to be family: sticking together through thick and thin, while providing plenty of laughs along the way.
