If you’re looking for a different haircut experience, Floyd’s Barbershop on University Boulevard may be your place.

Floyd’s has been a staple of Denver for over 10 years, with the original shop located minutes away on Broadway.

Nowadays, it has bona-fide chain status, with identical-looking shops on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles and multiple other locations around the country.

The DU location has been around for over 4 years and is the location to get your hair cut for many DU students, both male and female.

Floyd’s is known for its rock ‘n’ roll dCB)cor. The interior walls are plastered with album covers and beauty shots of famous rockers. Speakers blast everything from Weezer to Nine Inch Nails to Kanye West, with intermittent radio-style “shout-outs” by customers.

While this can make it a little hard to hear what your hairdresser is saying, especially if they’re washing your hair, it is a welcome change from the non-offensive atmosphere music generally heard in other salons.

In addition to the rock ‘n’ roll theme, some of the many draws of Floyd’s include their classic barbershop services. For guys, they offer an old-fashioned lather and straight edge razor shave for the face or the back of the neck. Everyone gets a free one-minute massage with any cut, although that service may not be all it’s hyped up to be.

Hairdressers wear a vibrating machine on one hand and softly rub the back of the neck and shoulders. While it certainly doesn’t feel bad, it seems more like a gimmick than a legitimate service.

Floyd’s hairdressers are generally well adapted for odd styles and know their way around a shaver.

If you know what you want, it’s easy to walk in and describe it – no picture needed. Floyd’s offers full color services in addition to many other style-specific cuts.

The prices can be a little high, especially if you’re only there for a quick trim or a shave. A buzz cut is $16, and a standard Floyd’s Cut is $21, not including the $4 extra hair wash. Some hairdressers are also willing to do follow-up trims at a cheap price.

From there, prices rise, though they’re reasonable if you want something guaranteed better than Supercuts, but aren’t looking for something too high- end.

The location, so close to the DU campus, can also make up for the price with convenience.

Floyd’s doesn’t take appointments, but you can call in 30 minutes ahead to be put on the waiting list, otherwise it’s fine to just walk in. Service is generally very prompt, though it’s best to call ahead just in case they happen to be busier than usual.

While your experience can depend a lot on the hairdresser you end up with, Floyd’s is a location worth checking out if you’re looking for something close, relatively affordable and with a fun atmosphere.

Floyd’s is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. A full list of their services and prices, as well as the schedules of specific hairdressers, can be found at floydsbarbershop.com.
