The women’s tennis team beat Arkansas State 6-1 on Saturday at the Colorado Athletic Club-Monaco in Denver to continue their five-match winning streak, including three consecutive conference victories.
On Jan. 21-22, the Pioneers kicked off their season by beating Utah State and Boise State. Last weekend, Denver topped the University of Texas-El Paso 6-1 as well as in-state rival CSU 5-2. With the exception of the CSU win, the Pioneers have won every match of the current streak 6-1.
This Saturday, doubles tandems made up of juniors Sophia Bergner and Steffi Rath, junior Emma Isberg and sophomore Elena Najera and sophomores Caroline Schnell and Natalie Dunn executed a clean sweep of the doubles competition against the Red Wolves.
After their relatively smooth doubles performance, head coach Jeremy Wurtzman said the rest of the competition was not nearly as easy to win.
“Tonight was a very hard match,” said Wurtzman. “Arkansas State came out after the doubles point and fought until the end. We are happy that we were able to come away with the win and beat a conference team.”
Bergner and Rath defeated their singles opponents to stay undefeated at 5-0 in singles matches. Isberg was able to hold on to her win streak of 4-0, and Schnell and Dunn also won their singles matches.
This win puts the Pioneers at a record of 5-0 and drops Arkansas State to 1-2. The Crimson and Gold will defend their current streak against BYU and Utah on Friday and Sunday on the road. The 5-0 beginning to the season marks the Pioneers’ best start since 2007-2008, when the team went 14-0.
