Revenge ends as it began. In “Chaos,” the show’s fifteenth episode, the series finally reaches the epic scene with which it started: dramatic narration, a gunshot, the beach and women running in slow motion in ball gowns. Full circle, yes? Only now, the audience is given answers.
The engagement party of Daniel Grayson (Joshua Bowman) and Emily Thorne (Emily VanCamp), aptly themed “Fire and Ice,” comes off the heels of Charlotte Grayson (Christa B. Allen) learning her father is actually David Clarke (James Tupper), making her Amanda Clarke (Emily VanCamp)’s sister. As well, Jack (Nick Wechsler) learns Victoria Grayson (Madeleine Stowe) is the primary reason for Amanda’s suffering as a child. Emily finds her box of secrets and diabolical plans has gone missing, and though she first suspects Amanda she finds it is someone else much more unstable.
In a show built upon its soap-operatic dramas, revelations at every turn and a twist in every episode, Revenge surprisingly maintains some level of plausibility as the characters, though numerous, are well-developed enough at least to give depth and emotion to the far-fetched and tangled web the creators and writers are spinning
The tragic story of damaged child Amanda Clarke grown and seeking vengeance on the woman who stood idly by as her father became the most hated man in America before his death oddly warms the heart. Though not endearing, the audience feels for her, in her emotional and psychological instability and broken childhood. Her relationships are fragmented, her heart gone cold. Yet the audience is left wondering, “is she really the victim?
The episode ends with the death of a loved one, akin to the one inspired her plot for revenge in the first place. And with the unexpected deaths, broken hearts, shattered lives and blood spilt, the show truly proves to its viewers when it comes to revenge, some people will stop at nothing.
