The Pioneers tallied their third consecutive victory and first road win of the season as they defeated Brigham Young University on Friday, but dropped from No. 17 to No. 20.

DU recorded a final score of 193.750, narrowly topping BYU’s 191.850.

“It wasn’t our best meet from a team score perspective, but wins on the road are always nice,” said head coach Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart. “There were a lot of individual highlights, as we were able to win three events and the all-around, but we have some things to work on in the gym this week before we head to Ohio State next Saturday.”

The Pioneers have posted scores above 195 the past two weeks, and despite being plagued by injuries, the team is still going strong. Sophomore Melodie Pulgarin-Linero, who was unable to compete last week due to illness, demonstrated her full recovery this week as she won the all-around competition with a 39.075.

Freshman Elesse Sakai-Hart, who competed last week with a broken toe, managed to hold down a solid 9.050 on the beam, clinching the victory by one-fifth of a point.

Sophomore Moriah Martin, the reigning Verizon Western Athletic Conference Event Specialist of the Week, scored a 9.9 on vault. Along with Pulgarin Linero, who tied for 2nd with a 9.825, the team was able to make it to the third rotation with a 0.10 lead.

On the floor, sophomore Jorie Hall and senior Louise Mercer shared the 1st-place event title.  The team won the event despite scoring a composite 48.650, their lowest of the season.

The Pioneers also won a narrow victory on beam with junior Simona Castro and Pulgarin-Linero each bringing in a of 9.7.

The Pioneers head to Columbus, Ohio on Saturday Feb. 18, where they will face No. 11 Ohio State.
