what went right

The Pioneers took revenge on the Western Kentucky Lady  Hilltoppers on Sunday, defeating the team who ended their season last year and improving to 11-8 overall. Senior forward Kaetlyn Murdoch scored 10 points and recorded three blocks to become DU’s all-time blocked shots leader.

Murdoch was one of five Pioneers to score in double-figures. Freshman guards Morgan Van Riper-Rose and Jordan Johnston finished with 13 and 11 points, respectively. Junior guard Emiko Smith added 11 points and sophomore guard Quincey Noonan recorded 10 points for Denver. Smith tied her season high with nine assists, while Noonan grabbed a team-best eight rebounds in the win.

what went wrong

The Pioneers made a strong showing against the Hilltoppers, but WKU topped them in several aspects of the game. Denver was 7-of-12 (58.3 percent) from the free-throw line compared to the Hilltoppers’ 13-of-17 (76.5 percent). DU also allowed WKU’s LaTiera Owens to record 18 points and 11 rebounds.

The Pioneers begin a two-game road trip on Thursday against Louisiana-Monroe at 4:30 p.m. The Pioneers will take on North Texas at 4 p.m. Saturday.
