Several groups and departments on campus are planning major renovations to the Driscoll Student Center in the coming months.
The plans have been in the works for a few months, according to Carl Johnson, director of campus activities.
“We’ve been in conversation since the summer,” Johnson said.
Possible renovations include reworking the east-facing side of Driscoll North, near Grill on the Greens, to make the area more inviting, according to Johnson.
Another area of Driscoll that may be renovated is the small outdoor courtyard at the 3rd level of the building adjacent to the Student Life office. The area currently houses several tables and a small community garden.
These potential changes, which include a sunshade, are meant to make the patio more usable in the long-term, according to Johnson.
Changes to the area between Driscoll Green and the bridge itself might include more tents, increased shade and more brick, as well as another entrance to the building.
This change is only in the discussion stages and is still in the process of being officiated and funded, said Johnson.
Driscoll North temporarily houses the Penrose Library in addition to Jazzman’s Cafe, Sidelines Pub and numerous student and faculty offices.
“We’re trying to create a space outdoors that’s a little more livable, especially in the warm months of the year, so people would use the space more,” said John Nichols, the director of the Driscoll Student Center.
The plans, which have not yet been finalized, might include an elevated stage for live entertainment, Nichols said. A stage used to exist on Driscoll Green but was torn down during renovations several years ago.
Neither Johnson nor Nichols spoke of a budget for the project.
According to Nichols, there really isn’t a budget at this time.
“[The cost] would certainly be in the thousands,” Nichols said.
