Approximately 375 first-year students voted to elect representatives Lena Chhay and Alisa Brown as USG senators last Tuesday.
One-third of eligible freshmen voted.
Brown, a psychology and marketing major, said that she used her political skills in order to win by both aligning her ticket with another candidate and by using social media to organize her followers. She also went to the hockey camp-out in order to increase her name recognition among students and to meet with her fellow classmates.
“I’m really excited about USG,” said Brown. “It not only sounds really fun, but I think it will really broaden my horizons. I wanted to figure out the small changes that DU needs that could really affect campus-like increasing access to community service programs.”
Brown worked hard to be the new senator, but said that even if she lost, she would have been happy just to have met so many new people.
Lenna Chhay, an international studies and political science major, donned what she said was a “gigantic” sign at both the hockey camp-out and on Election Day reading “Lenna Chhay for First-Year Senator!”
“I’m most excited for implementing the ideas that I’ve collected from talking with students, as well as my platform ideas,” said Chhay. “Change is in the air and it’s exciting!”
According to Chhay, her changes for DU include creating a first-year spirit group, a school-sponsored dance for the class of 2015 and increasing the number of bike racks around campus.
Both Brown and Chhay agreed that their experiences in running for USG was worth it, citing such accomplishments as “meeting new students” and “having fun campaigning.” Brown also said that some first-year senator candidates “took [the election] way more serious than others.”
“As long as everyone in our class gets the best year of their lives, not much else matters,” said Chhay.
