“Fast Five,” the fifth installment of the “Fast and Furious” series, set box office history for an April, riding an all-star cast to an $83.6 million dollar opening.
The movie achieves great success through its action-heavy plot and series cast, including Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris and Sung Kang all within the same screen once again.
Director Justin Lin (“Annapolis”) adds a new cast member to the series- the only man that makes Vin Diesel look like a little girl – Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
“Fast Five” succeeds in doing what the first four installments failed to do: totally disregard a plot.
By relinquishing any attention that is remotely close to a plot, the actors are able to be cooler than ever and provide nonstop explosive action sequences with very little breath in between.
The film begins very quickly with the short-lived imprisonment of Dominic Toretto (Diesel), leading to his immediate escape facilitated by Brian O’Conner (Walker) and Mia Toretto (Brewster).
The three of them are tired of running from the law and have been boxed into the beautiful city of Rio de Janeiro on a mission to pull off the “job of all jobs” worth over $100 million.
To do so, they need an all-star team.
And who better to ask than series favorites Roman Pearce (Gibson), Tej (Ludacris) and Han (Kang) among others.
The only problem is along with robbing the most powerful man in Rio, they must outwit United States federal agent Luke Hobbs (Johnson) known for never missing his target.
Diesel and Johnson’s characters are matched up in a five-minute long fistfight, which becomes the battle of whose biceps are abnormally more powerful.
Random and pointless race scenes ensue solely as an ego booster for the returning cast.
This movie gives the audience everything they could ever ask for in an action film, including fast car chases, loud explosions, good-looking girls and lengthy fight scenes.
“Fast Five” is more than just a moneymaker. It is pure, adrenaline inducing entertainment.
