Men’s and women’s tennis seasons ended at the Sun Belt Conference tournament last week.
Women’s tennis recap
The Pioneer’s postseason run, which featured wins over Arkansas-Little Rock and a long battle with the Louisiana Monroe, came to an end this past weekend.
DU lost to Louisiana-Lafayette in the Sun Belt Conference semifinals 4-1.
“We came out and played strong against Arkansas-Little Rock,” said head coach Jeremy Wurtzman. “In the second round we had a six-hour battle against Louisiana Monroe, and we won, which was really good for our program. That win showed our hard work and the commitment we had made to the team.”
Despite the first round victory and the second round upset, the Pioneers didn’t have enough left to advance past ULL and into the SBC championship.
“Against Louisiana-Lafayette we started off slow and tired, a sort of hangover from the long match the previous day,” said Wurtzman.
The team has a considerable upside looking forward, because it is a young team, with five freshmen and two sophomores in the starting lineup.
“As a young team, we could have easily lost our confidence after a hard regular season. Instead we came together, made a run in the post-season, and we are only getting better,” said Wurtzman.
Next year all of the athletes are coming back and they hope to bring their momentum from this past weekend into the next season.
Men’s tennis recap
The No. 1 Pioneer men’s tennis team advanced, by virtue of a first round bye, to the semifinals of the Sun Belt Conference tournament, where they lost to Middle Tennessee 4-3.
“We believed we were going to win a championship, so our loss to Middle Tennessee was extremely disappointing.” said head coach Danny Westerman.
Although the Pioneers came up short of their post-season goal, four of the team’s players were named to the all-conference team, which shows the high level of talent that was present on this year’s team.
“Andrew Landwerlen graduates, and it is impossible to replace a two-time all-conference tennis player,” said Westerman. “But, we will have Fabio Biasion healthy again [next season] and a strong recruiting class will give us depth as we chase a championship.”
