Hockey forward Beau Bennett, a Gardena, Calif. native, established himself as a scoring forward for the Pioneers throughout the 2010-2011 season. The freshman recorded 25 points (nine goals, 16 assists) in 37 games in his first season at DU. Bennett was selected in the first round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft (No. 20 overall) by the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Clarion had the opportunity to sit down with Beau Bennet to discuss Bennett’s first year on campus and some of the things he enjoys.

What made you decide DU?

I was visiting schools and I narrowed it down to BC (Boston College) and DU. When I came out to Denver I really liked the city, the coaches and the players.

What is it like playing for Coach George Gwozdecky?

You learn a lot everyday. He’s very well spoken and sees the game well. I try and take in everything he says while learning as much as possible.

What is your favorite sport to watch?

Hockey. Outside of hockey it’s football. I really enjoy hanging out and relaxing on Sunday and watching football.

Who is your favorite professional sports team?

The Los Angeles Kings. They are my hometown team, and I’ve always liked them. I live right down the street from where they play.

Who is your favorite professional athlete?

Ray Ferraro.

Besides Pittsburgh, what would be your dream city to play hockey in?

I think going back to LA playing in front of friends and family would be unbelievable.

What is your favorite sport to play besides hockey?

Basketball.

Who was your champion for the 2011 NCAA Championship?

This is the first year in a while I didn’t get around to creating a bracket. I picked Duke to win it all, but unfortunately they got eliminated.

Who is your team to win the 2011 Stanley Cup?

I’m gonna say the Penguins – I’ve got a little bit of a loyalty there now. Out of the Western Conference I like the Kings to do damage.

What is your favorite band or artist?

Wiz Khalifa or Shawn McDonald.

What is your favorite movie?

My favorite movie right now is “Inception.”

What meal do you like to eat before games?

Chicken and pasta. We always have a pre-game meal and I am not superstitious so I just eat what’s there.

Where is your favorite place to eat on/off campus?

I like to go to the Spicy Pickle and use the convenient flex cash my parents give me every month.

Who’s your favorite professor at DU?

Definitely my Spanish professor, Claudia Croke.
