Imagine three days like this: a morning of skiing, pit stop at the hot tub, followed by hours of dancing to ground-stomping music.

The next music festival in Colorado is taking a fresh, cooler form. Snowball Music Festival, the first festival of its kind to be held in the winter, will feature many performances in Vail, Colo., starting on Friday and ending Sunday.

The Flaming Lips, Pretty Lights and Bassnectar will headline the festival.

Dozens of artists have already been confirmed to play the three-day festival, which is hosting a variety of music styles including rock, indie rock, electronic, dub step, folk and hip-hop.

“Variety certainly played an integral role in our artist selections,” said Chad Donnelly, founder of Snowball Music Festival.

“We focused on acts that we love to see live, acts that are developing or already have a reputation for the spectacular.”

Donnelly and his team certainly chose headliners to fit this profile. For years The Flaming Lips has returned to Colorado to play, rocking out at Red Rocks and appearing at the Belly Up in Aspen, Colo.

With confetti-filled canons, bundles of balloons and a motley mix of lasers, the Lips delivers a spectacular show. At Red Rocks in 2009 the Lips opened for Stardeath & White Dwarfs, and the Lips’ lead singer Wayne Coyne crowd surfed – while standing inside of a giant hamster ball.

Pretty Lights is Colorado’s heartthrob, selling out shows at both the Ogden and Gothic Theatres, and returning for another full house at Red Rocks. Pretty Lights producer Derek Vincent Smith, continues to advance his style through an intermixture of electro-hip hop, at times synthesized with samples of funk and jazz.

Bassnectar is DJ Lorin Ashton, who fuses together electronic music and a heavy-hitting base. Ashton never fails to keep the dance floor bumping. After the release of his album Cozza Frenzy, Bassnectar headlined the Fillmore, selling out the show.

There may be some stage surprises at Snowball, but with artists likes these leading the show, it’s a guaranteed great time.

People attending the Snowball Music Festival will have the opportunity to enjoy activities the winter elements have to offer and bask in the beauty of the coalition of music in the mountains, just as Donnelly intended.

“From the beginning, the idea was really to bridge the mountains and music, and with that, comes a totally different day,” said Donnelly.

Other artists confirmed to perform include Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, Lotus, Local Natives, Eoto, Savoy, Big Gigantic, Portugal, The Man and Brother Ali.
