The Undergraduate Student Government’s Diversity Committee hosted a dessert event for first-year students last night in Driscoll Underground to help better integrate them into the campus community.
The Diversity Committee is “trying to bridge the gap” with the event, hoping to build unity between first-years and the rest of the student body, said sophomore Stuart Portman, USG natural sciences and math senator and Diversity Committee chair.
The event drew more than 70 students, all of whom received free t-shirts. Attendees had a selection of desserts that included brownies and cookies.
The first-year student dessert night was the first of three events the Diversity Committee is hosting to build community between different segments of the student body and the greater population.
On Wednesday the committee will hold an event for Greek life students at 6:30 p.m. in the Gottesfeld Room on the third floor of the Ritchie Center.
Professor Corey Ciocchetti will speak at the event, followed by a speed-dating activity for attendees.
The committee is planning to host a third event for student athletes, which will probably be in April, said Portman.
These unity events are open to anyone, but are focused on the group they are targeted to.
“We’re trying to do this to work to their strengths,” he said.
Along with the Black Student Alliance, the committee is also co-hosting a unity formal on Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. in the Driscoll Ballroom. RSVPs are not required.
