Men’s lacrosse ranked No. 13 in preseason polls

With the 2011 season only two weeks away, the Pioneers Men’s Lacrosse team looks forward to another successful season. NCAA Division-1 Rankings has the Pioneers ranked No. 14th in the pre-season polls.

After finishing 12-5 in 2010, DU looks to build on some of the key strengths from last years team.

Leading scorers Alex Demopoulos and Mark Matthews will return for their juniors seasons. Demopoulous finished with an impressive 60 points (36 goals, 24 assists), while Matthews was second in scoring for the Pioneers with 49 points (38 goals, 11 assists).

The Pioneers will open the season Feb. 20 in Syracuse, New York versus No. 5 Syracuse.

The schedule also includes an afternoon game against No. 3 Duke on April 9 in Bethpage, New York.

 

Wrenn acquisition paying off for

Winterhawks

Former DU defensemen William Wrenn is showing his talents for the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League US Divison.

After leaving the University of Denver in search of more playing time, Wrenn has stepped in for the Winterhawks injured captain Brett Ponich.

Wrenn was drafted 43rd overall in the 2009 NHL Draft by the San Jose Sharks.

Wrenn, 19, has a lot of valuable experience including playing for the US National Team Development Program from 2007-2009. For the 2008-2009 campaign, Wrenn served as team captain.

Wrenn also represented the United States in the 2009 International Ice Hockey Federation World United 18 Championships in which the US defeated team Canada to take gold.

Since joining the Winterhawks on Jan. 4th, Wrenn has played in 13 games recording 6 points (2 goals, 4 assists) while accumulating 9 penalty minutes.
