With snow falling and temperatures falling faster, it would be easy to hunker down and wait for better weather.
Denver sports teams have seemingly shared this sentiment. Ice has slowed the Broncos, the once proud and powerful.
The Nuggets are left out in the cold even as Carmelo heats up, yet demands out of Denver like former Bronco-star Brandon Marshall, who ironically enough was sitting courtside last Thursday night at the Pepsi Center.
Meanwhile, potential suitors for Melo have decided to ride out the storm and wait until the looming trade deadline at the end of the month or free agency this summer.
Even the Avalanche, the professional team most used to ice, seem frozen in the past. Is there any hope for Denver sports?
Aside from our very own Pioneer’s hockey team, the Rockies are the change in weather you’ve been waiting for. (Sorry, soccer fans. A trophy for the Rapids is great. But, it would be better if they won it for a city outside of America. Like Milan. Or Madrid. They would care. In America, we don’t).
Who would have thought this was even possible five years ago? For too long the Brothers Monfort have bided their time. Now it seems they have seized the opportunity to be the premier professional sports club. The Rockies have all the potential to piece together a summer sensation.
They have found a new franchise face in Troy Tulowitzki, all-star power with an all-star smile in Carlos Gonzalez, and an ace who can strike fear into hitters in Ubaldo Jimenez.
Michael Young, rumored to be on the trade block, would only enhance the Rockies’ slugging staff.
The lineup is capable of producing more runs than a Ford car factory and the pitching staff could produce more swings-and-misses than Super Bowl commercials. After all these years, it might be time for Dinger to lead a parade down 16th street.
Baseball is a game of optimism; there is still hope for victory until the final out—unless Mariano Rivera is closing.
And with such dismal weather and hardly a reason to cheer, it is nice to know that the Rockies should give Colorado a reason to shout.
Throw in a little bit of hope, and you may as well have the recipe for victory. (Someone should run a political campaign like that).
As the brisk winter air fades to fullest spring, the boys of summer will make the woes of the Broncos melt, the Nuggets’ problems slide away, and the Avalanche wait in the wings for another icy season.
Pitchers and catchers report in a week. Just in time to inspire the optimism that only a new season of baseball can. Just in time to thaw the ice that has gripped Denver.
