Housed where the memory-filled Stick-e-Star bar and restaurant used to be, Skew is the newest and the trendiest eatery off campus.
Serving Asian fusion dishes in a stylish and comfortable atmosphere, Skew, a fast casual restaurant, offers a refreshing alternative to the bar and culinary scene around campus.
Skew’s concept is food on a stick, hence the name. Almost everything is served on a stick or finger food.
Customers are welcomed by a friendly and informative staff and a Zen-like approach to a college environment restaurant.
The menu offers four meats: dark meat chicken, light meat chicken, pork loin or Angus filet steak for the “House Skews.”
These skewers are the most simple and consist of grilled meat with your choice of marinade sauce.
Speciality skews also are available, such as those containing Tsukune meatballs (egg yolks, onions and scallions basted in teriyaki sauce kneaded together with white and dark chicken meat) or Rainbow shrimp, which include tiger shrimp and applewood smoked bacon combined with mango, pinapple, green apples and a total of three salsas.
If you are looking for something a little more thrilling, try a grilled or fried specialty skew.
These range from Hawaiian Barbecue Chicken, Chimichurri Angus Filet Skewers and Spicy Newport Shrimp. Skews like these are priced from $3.75 to $6.75 for a pair of skews.
If you want a little bit more bang for your buck and a chance to sample a little bit of everything from Skew’s menu, try the Skew Bento Box.
This box includes your of choice steamed or fried rice, a house salad, Kurobuta sausage, a daily sushi roll, daily vegetarian salad, daily noodle salad, a specialty skewer with the meat of your choice and daily fresh fruit.
The Bento Box goes for $9.75, which might seem a little pricey, but for the quantity and quality of food, it turns out to be fairly reasonable.
Besides having an extensive and creative food menu, Skew also has an extensive beverage list.
Mixed drinks go for around $6-$7, and there are a variety of creative drinks to choose from with fashionable names like Dragontini and Oriental Princess.
The Dragontini contains a blended mixture of TY KU Citrus liquor, TY KU Soju (an updated version of an ancient distilled spirit), Midori (provides a fruity melon taste) and a splash of lychee juice.
Going along with its predominantly Asian theme, Skew offers special deals on sake, a rice-based alcoholic beverage of Japanese origin, during lunch as well as happy hour prices on all drinks in the evening.
Although Skew just opened last Monday, it is already fairly busy. With its chic and youthful atmosphere, original menu and affordable prices, Skew looks like it’s on the path to becoming a definite hotspot for students looking to enjoy a tasty meal and relax with a drink.
On top of this, Skew offers both delivery and catering services.
Skew is open Monday through Saturday 11a.m.-12a.m. and Sunday 11am-9p.m. and is located at 2070 University Blvd.
