Garbanzo Mediterranean Grill began delivery service Wednesday at its 2045 S. University Blvd. location, serving to local businesses and campus-area residents.

The perimeter for delivery will focus primarily on campus about a half mile in each direction. Currently the location has five drivers, a few of whom were promoted from the inside of the shop to the roads. Currently, delivery is free with a $10 minimum order.

Bob Bafundo, director of franchise development and operations at the Denver-area restaurant, partially attributes the delivery initiative to minimal parking options for customers.

“We’ve gotten lots of positive feedback from students and professors, but the biggest frustration we get from customers is the lack of parking,” Bafundo said. “We finally got to the point to address this concern. There is no way to add parking, so the next best option was to take the food to the customer.”

Garbanzo offers a variety of healthy Mediterranean dishes and stresses its guests’ ability to customize meals with fresh pitas, falafels, hummus and various sauces and dressings. Some ingredients are locally grown while others are imported directly from the Mediterranean region.

Beth Hardy, public relations supervisor, called the process to organize food delivery a “serious effort.” Garbanzo has been looking at the implementation of a delivery option for the past six months and aggressively planning for three.

“This does not change anything from a food preparation standpoint,” Bafundo said. “The challenge is logistical, to maintain quality and still have the same food.”

The franchise was established in January 2008 and has since developed 11 stores in Colorado, 10 of which are located in the Denver area.

Bafundo explained that despite tough economic times, the eatery has been successful and intends to launch two additional locations before the end of the year.

He added that the franchise is considering an attempt at going national to other major metropolitan areas. The option for delivery at the DU location is a test concept for potential expansion elsewhere.

Another task the restaurant will concentrate on in the coming weeks is marketing and advertising. Door hanger coupons, refrigerator magnets and premiums will be distributed. Bafundo anticipates that customers will respond favorably.

“Garbanzo offers a unique culinary experience, combining Mediterranean influences with fast, friendly service,” junior Matt Blei said. “It’s an excellent alternative to the standard burger and fries. Delivery will provide students with a healthier option.”
