Men’s golf 2010 season underway

The men’s golf team started their 2010 season yesterday at the Fifth Annual Callaway Invitational in San Diego, Calif.

The tournament continues today and is being hosted by the University of San Diego.

The Invitational is being played at the Farms Golf Club and consists of three rounds with a par of 72.

Joining DU and San Diego are a variety of teams that include Fresno State, Southern Methodist, Saint Mary’s College, Texas El-Paso, Loyola Marymount, CSU-Bakersfield, UC Irvine, CSU-Northridge, Santa Clara, San Diego State and UC Santa Barbara.

Yesterday all the teams participated in the opening two rounds and will play the final round today at 7:45 a.m.

Last season the Toreros of San Diego hosted and won the 2009 Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship.

 

Women’s golf starts play

The women’s golf team started their 2010 season yesterday at the Northrupp Grumman Regional Challenge in Palos Verdes, Calif.

The competition will span three days, ending on Wednesday, Feb. 10 and consists of three rounds with a par of 71.

Ohio State University is hosting the event, which is being played at the Palos Verdes Golf Club.

Fifteen teams are participating, including 2009 National Champion Arizona State.

Other teams include Colorado, Louisville, Florida, California, Duke, Michigan State, Ohio State, Pepperdine, TCU, UC Irvine, UCLA, USC and Wake Forest.

Earlier this season, the Pioneers finished first in the Ron Moore Intercollegiate and followed with an impressive finish in the NCAA fall preview in late October.

 

Swimming and diving awarded

The men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams are on the Scholar-Athlete All-American list by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) last week.

The Pioneers were one of two teams out of 341 intercollegiate swimming and diving teams awarded by the CSCAA.

The programs that make up the list were required to post GPA’s above 3.0 during the fall semester.

The men’s team finished tied for sixth in the nation with a GPA of 3.25, while the women finished 13th with a 3.42 GPA.

American University’s men’s swimming and diving team led the nation this past fall with a 3.47 GPA, while the Gardner-Webb’s women’s swimming and diving team led all women’s team with a GPA of 3.52.

The Pioneers next meet is the SBC Championships, which will start on Feb. 17.
