The student senate will now operate with the name Undergraduate Student Government, a name change that took place over the summer.
According to President Antoine Perretta, the senate, formerly the All Undergraduate Student Association, changed their name in part to increase name recognition.
“One big reason for the change is that many people did not know what AUSA stood for, so we anticipate more people to recognize and know the meaning of the USG acronym,” Perretta said.
Over the summer the Constitution Task Force chose the name USG when updating senate documents.
The new name was given formal approval by the Board of Trustees Student and Alumni Affairs committee two weeks ago.
Another thing that prompted the name change was the reinstitution of the Judicial Branch, creating three branches of student government. This was part of campaign promise made in the spring by Perretta and Vice President Jim Francescon.
Student government has not had a Judicial Branch since the mid 1980s. The resolution was passed last year to create this branch again.
It will serve to check the Legislative and Executive branches, as well as handle conflicts and all violations of licensed students organizations.
A formal announcement of the name change will come from the senate once the new logo has been finished.
