International open house “Abra a Casa” India the International House’s Open House will begin at 6 p.m. today. Students are invited to come and enjoy games and snacks until 8:30 p.m.

Religion conference The Department of Religious Studies will host a University and Metrowide Conference on the place of religion on a secular campus. The conference will be held on Friday from 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. in Driscoll Ballroom. Topics of discussion will range from questioning how religion should be taught and practiced on a secular campus to how secular schools can meet their student’s spiritual needs. Everyone is invited to attend and lunch will be provided to the first 200 registrants. For more information visit www.religious-studies.us.

Earth Day tree plantingAs a part of the Earth Day celebrations the Denver Park System and GSIS are hosting a tree planting event on Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Those interested are asked to contact Kimberly Kidd in advance because space is limited.

Anniversary jazz concert Eight-time Grammy Award winning Jazz group, The Manhattan Transfer will perform in Gates Concert Hall on Saturday, at 7:30 p.m. to commemorate the Concert Hall’s fifth anniversary. All net proceeds from the concert will support the Newman Center Building and Operations Fund. Tickets can be purchased through the Newman Center Box Office.

Holocaust Awareness Week Holocaust and Genocide Awareness Week will begin on Monday April 28 with a Litany. The 24-hour memorial, during which volunteers representing many DU organizations will read the names of Holocaust victims in front of Sturm Hall, will begin at 1:30 p.m. and end at 1:30 p.m. the following afternoon.

Iraq and Vietnam lectureA lecture titled “Iraq and Vietnam: Similarities and Contrasts” with Richard Falk will be held in the Cherrington Cyber Café on Monday, April 29, from 12-2 p.m. Please RSVP to Colleen Ryan.

Iran lectureA lecture on the U.S. policy with Iran, given by Ebrahim Yazdi, secretary-general of the Freedom Movement of Iran, will be hosted in Mary Reed Hall on Tuesday, April 29, at 12:30 p.m. Pizza will be provided. Students interested are asked to RSVP to Lea Frank.

Essay contestThe Nation magazine is holding an essay contest for college students and will award a $1,000 grand prize and a subscription to Nation to the winner. Five finalists will be awarded $200 each. Essays submissions should not exceed 800 words and should answer the question: what have you learned from a personal experience that the next president should know before setting the agenda for the country? Entries will be accepted through May 31. A winner will be announced by Sept. 4. Essays can be submitted at studentprize@thenation.com.

Thesis presentationA graduate student will present the culmination of her thesis work, a performance cinema experience which explores the unearthing of the ATRA ritual performance. The event will be held at 7:30 p.m. May 1-3.
