Three listeners were tuned into Patricia Harris’ Monday afternoon talk radio show on KVDU last week, and she couldn’t be more pleased. Harris’ show “Accents,” which airs at 1 p.m. on Mondays, focuses on human interest stories within the local Denver community.”It’s about the spice in life,” Harris said. “Similar to the affects of potpourri, I want to encourage listeners to diversify their lives with arts and food and advice from local professionals.” A senior at the Women’s College, Harris’ first guest was fellow student Julie Cordova.”It was a pleasure having Julie because she is the one that motivated me to get involved in this,” said Harris.Cordova also has a radio talk show on Mondays that airs from 10 a.m. to noon. Her show, “Take Action Talk Radio for Success,” is modeled after the company she founded, The Action Planner. Cordova helps clients overcome obstacles to achieve their goals.”I help a lot of women in the corporate industry change their ideas of the way the corporate world is set up,” explains Cordova. “Because men in the corporate world typically have wives at home to do everything, they don’t face the same challenges women in the same positions face.”Harris and Cordova, both communication and women’s studies majors, had no prior DJ experience.”It’s been the blind leading the blind because this is the first time I had touched radio dials,” said Cordova. The women, who responded to a flier promoting KVDU, went to an interest meeting, picked up a program schedule on Wednesday, trained on Thursday and aired the following Monday.”I thought I did okay despite the lack of training, but one of my listeners told me that while I thought I was playing music to take a break, I was actually recording!” Cordova said. The two shows that run consecutively are a sharp contrast to the other undergraduate programs on the schedule such as “Free Sex with Will and Bryan” and “The Big O” that draw a larger audience.”I’m very open minded and I’m interested in living and learning as much as I can which I hope will make for a good show,” said Harris. “If each week I have one more listener it will be a success.”Because the station is eclectic, made up of faculty, staff and traditional and non-traditional students, the women believe they will attract listeners.”You have to give the audience what they want,” said Cordova. “Even if they tune in for 10 or 15 minutes it’s nice to see the support and we know that all depends on us.”The two talk show hosts have been promoting their shows by adding it to the Women’s College listserv, various newsletters and e-mails and creating fliers to post around campus. Although the women are not paid to be hosts, they will both receive independent study credit that they can apply to their degrees.Harris who plans to graduate in the spring has little interest in pursuing a career in radio. Originally from the Republic of Panama, she is currently an independent interpreter for clients who need to visit a doctor, or workers compensation officers. Harris also has a strong background in media, having worked as a public affairs director for a TV station in California and doing freelance work for the Oakland Post.”I want to get back into TV and working on documentaries, but not in front of the camera,” said Harris. “It’s amazing the kind of information you can get.”Harris also admits she would like to write a novel, but is struggling to sort through hundreds of ideas. Cordova also has dreams of becoming a published writer. This is why she has enrolled in the Women’s College.”I tried to get published several times but felt that not having a degree automatically put me into a slush pile,” Cordova said. “Now I’m really excited about all of the possibilities out there.”With a list of guest ranging from local professionals, to artists, to professors, both shows offer a diverse range of topics for the DU community. Tune into “Accents,” “Take Action” and other KVDU shows, by logging onto www.kvdu.du.edu and clicking on “program schedule” to listen live from your computer. The station also invites submissions for shows.
