Last week’s two snowstorms brought much needed moisture after the driest January in Colorado’s history and triggered plenty of activity around the University of Denver campus.

Students celebrated the first big snowfall by rolling in the powdery drifts in front of Penrose Library. Some made snow-angels, while other used the parking lots for doing doughnuts.

Although the snow caused senior Shannon Malone to spend hours driving in from Frisco, she said the delays were well worth the much-needed snow. Later in the day, she decided to snow-skate, putting her skateboard on top of her snowboard.

Malone said, “Snow-skating is a great way to get around in the snow.”

The new snow made many DU students anxious to head for the mountains to test Colorado’s famous “champagne powder.” Stephanie Haynes, who had just returned from the ESPN X-Games, said she couldn’t wait to turn around and go back.

The snow did not stop the DU intramural football teams from playing their weekly game. The snow was no problem for Ben Jones and his Sigma Alpha Epsilon teammates. Their tactic worked, the team beat their opponent 40-0.

Dave Eichenstein was so anxious to enjoy the snow that he talked his roommates into walking around campus as the snowstorm intensified.

Eichenstein said, “I like the snow. I’m from LA, so the snow is still kind of new to me.”
