The Denver men’s soccer team hosted Loyola Marymount University at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium on Oct. 3, with Denver leaving the game with a 2-1 victory.
Junior defender Grant Lund scored the first goal of the game 38 minutes into the first half, giving Denver the 1-0 lead. Lund was assisted by sophomore midfielder Anthony Masino on a corner kick.
Loyola Marymount University looked to establish control and create an opportunity to come back. Junior Samir Djeha of LMU scored a penalty kick goal after a foul from Lund at the beginning of the second half, leaving the game tied 1-1.
After LMU tied the game, Denver responded by increasing its offensive pressure. The Crimson and Gold continued to move the ball forward and look for opportunities to regain the lead.
In the second half, fifth year forward Bryce Willoughby scored another goal for the Crimson and Gold, putting the team back on top 2-1.
Willoughby played for 75 minutes and scored the gamewinning goal. His goal was assisted by sophomore midfielder Erik Collins.
With Denver back in the lead, the Crimson and Gold continued to apply pressure as Loyola Marymount looked for another opportunity to equalize. Denver’s defense worked to maintain its advantage and prevent LMU from creating another scoring opportunity.
The match became tense as the game continued, with LMU receiving two red cards and two yellow cards during the match.
Denver continued to push forward while maintaining its defensive pressure and worked to hold onto its lead in the final minutes of the match.
The Crimson and Gold held onto their 2-1 advantage to secure the victory at home.The win moved Denver to 2-6-2 on the season.
The team’s next game is Oct. 10, at University of Denver Soccer Stadium, where they will face the University of San Francisco.
