The Middle Eastern Student Association (MESA) is a new student organization at DU. Established last month, the organization strives to share the vibrant spirit of Middle Eastern culture on campus.

MESA hopes to become a second home for Middle East and North Africa (MENA) students on campus as well as a place for anyone passionate about the Middle East to learn more about the diverse tapestry of religions, languages and cuisines that make up the region. The founding board has deep connections to the Middle East and a profound love for their culture, people, values, songs, music and cousins.

MESA is determined to create a safe space for anyone from the MENA region and beyond to come together to celebrate their Eids, embrace their culture and practice their religion in the company of others. Their goal is to create a support system for students to better aid them in the struggles that come with being so far away from home. In essence, MESA will become a family for its members.

MESA holds weekly meetings every Friday at 3 p.m. and plans to organize events that authentically represent and showcase an array of Middle Eastern cultures, with a “Taste of the Middle East” event coming soon. The last two meetings have focused on fostering community and support while also enjoying authentic cuisine such as Middle Eastern chai and Kaak (baked goods).
