Despite a decline in crime at the University of Denver since 2020, students are feeling as though their safety is in jeopardy this school year.
DU and the surrounding area are not particularly high-crime areas. However, Campus Safety reports document 800 crimes in 2020. According to the Campus Safety reports, the majority of crimes reported were misdemeanors. There were 121 reports of larceny and 187 reports of service crimes last year. Campus Safety puts out monthly reports updating community members on the crimes reported here.
So far in 2021, 402 crimes have been reported. As in 2020, larceny and service crimes have been the most frequently reported this year. Regardless of these low numbers, some students say they don’t feel as safe as they did last year.
DU students Lorrin Poulter and Ari Winters are two of the many concerned about their safety. Poulter and Winters are both juniors and noticed a difference regarding their safety since the pandemic.
Poulter said, “With everyone allowed to be back on campus, I don’t feel as safe. I feel this way especially now that parties are actually happening and you hear about people being drugged.”
Winters agreed with Poulter’s statement with the same feelings. “I feel the same way. There are a lot more sketchy things happening.”
Lydia Bartalo, a fifth-year student, feels as though crime on and around DU hasn’t changed. “I definitely noticed that I have gotten fewer alerts from CAMPO. But I don’t think the crime rate has changed… it’s just not being reported like it used to if that makes sense.”
Last Sunday on Sept. 19, there were 15 to 20 gunshots heard on the 2500 block of S. High St. There was at least one injured and no suspects were apprehended.
Motor vehicle thefts continue to be another common crime in Denver. According to the Denver Post, the DU community has seen 63 motor vehicle thefts this year. In comparison, Campus Safety has only reported 16 motor vehicle thefts so far.
While some crimes are inevitable, many can be avoided. Remember to stay vigilant and aware of your surroundings. If possible, travel in groups especially at night. Keep cars locked and remove or hide your valuables. Most importantly, if you see something, speak up and reach out to Campus Safety or Denver PD.
