With soccer season officially underway, the University of Denver’s Men’s Soccer team is poised to have another successful year. Coming off of an 11-6-3 record from 2012, the Pioneers are determined to finish their remaining 13 season games strong.
After making the leap from the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation to the Summit League this year, the Pioneers are ready for the change.
“We’re looking forward to being a member of the Summit,” said Head Coach Bobby Muuss. “To be fair, we don’t know much about any of the teams in the league besides looking at rosters, schedules and records from the previous years. We’re going to approach the Summit League the same way we did with the MPSF. We’ll do our best to come out on top at the end of the season.”
The Pios entered the the year as a preseason favorite to win the Summit League, headed by senior midfielder Zach Bolden, who finished seventh in the nation last year with ten assists. Senior Theodor Remman has played well early in the season as well, having collected the Summit League Defensive Player of the Week Award after a solid performance against St. Louis.
Three of the team’s last six games have been against opponents ranked in the NSCAA Top 25 Coaches Poll.
Currently, the Pios sit at 1-4-1 after close losses to No. 11 New Mexico, No. 21 Charlotte and No. 6 St. LouisOn Friday, Sept. 20 CIBER Field at 8 p.m. The Pioneers will take on a 4-2-0 Bradley University squad from Illinois that just recently upset first place Connecticut 1-0.
The Pios are also at home on Sunday, Sept. 22 at 1 p.m. against San Diego State University.
