Roars of laughter could be heard from Davis Auditorium last Tuesday night when comedian Ali Wong took the stage for one of DUPB’s special events of the quarter. Wong, who has been featured on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” as well as in Oliver Stone’s recent movie “Savages” and plays Olivia on NBC’s “Are You There Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea” was named one of the “10 Comics to Watch” for 2011 by Variety Magazine, according to her website.

DUPB decided they wanted to bring Wong to campus last February when they saw her perform at the national convention for the National Association for Campus Activities.

“When we saw Ali Wong do her routine, we all were dying of laughter,” said Ashley Bonner, member of the DUPB Special Events Board senior Business Management major from Colorado.

Wong was well received. Approximately 200 students showed up for the show, filling up about half of the Auditorium.

“Students told us they thought she was absolutely hilarious,” said Bonner.

“The best jokes are funny because they are true so I enjoyed her comments about DU,” said Natalie Wells, sophomore HRTM major from Arlington Heights, Ill., who attended the show.

Wong made many jokes about her personal sex life as well as her Asian race and a variety of different topics ranging from bachelorette parties to Mexican restaurants.

DU’s own improv team Skintight Outrage opened and closed the show performing improvised skits such as “Titanic in 30 seconds.”

DUPB is glad that the event was a success, according to Bonner.

“The mission of DUPB is to provide entertaining, inexpensive and inclusive events for students,” said Bonner. “Hearing that students had a great time makes all of the time and effort we put into bringing Ali Wong to DU completely worth it.”
