Two Daniels’ graduate students were each awarded a $2,500 David Sloan Scholarship from the Association for Corporate Growth (ACG) as part of the annual $25,000 the group gives away each year. The scholarship was developed by David Sloan, a former ACG board member.

The ACG is a business association group that offers access to resources in the business world and focuses on driving middle-market growth.

David Sloan was a leading merger and acquisition business man as well as an investment banker in the Southwest and was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1998. Sloan developed the scholarship in 2002 to give back to the Denver business community. Sloan is now famous for his book, One Day at a Time, which chronicles his life with his disorder.

Last Tuesday Britta Youngren and Clint Conley were awarded the scholarship at a ceremony held at the Denver Athletic Club.

“I was very excited to win the award and was honored to have been chosen among very qualified candidates as the final recipient,” said Youngren. “It felt great to be with other students that also won and to meet new people at ACG that support the scholarship.”

Youngren is in her second year of the full-time Daniels masters in business administration program with a concentration in non-profit marketing.

ACG created the scholarship for one student from Daniels’ and in 2010 expanded so there would be five recipients annually. The recipient must have a minimum of one full year of work experience and have maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better to be eligible for the award.

According to Youngren, the application required her resume and some answers to essay questions. She completed her application early January and was notified late February that she was one of the recipients.

Youngren said once she was selected for the second round, she attended a luncheon with the ACG David Sloan Scholarship Committee with three other candidates from DU. Then she received notification about winning the scholarship award within a week of the luncheon.

Her favorite part of the whole process was getting to meet Daivid Sloan and getting advice. He told her to be patient and  stay true to her dreams.

The scholarship is awarded on an annual basis but recipients have the possibility of winning it more than once.

Three other business school students, from the University of Colorado and Colorado State University, were also awarded the scholarships.
