Winter quarter is finally out of the way and a brand new slate is in the making. The stress of finals is an issue that will not arise for another eight weeks, making it even easier to enjoy what spring quarter has to offer.

When students were asked if they were glad that finals are over, there was definitely some excitement.

“Of course I’m glad, and as much as I hate the quarter system being a bio student, I love the fact that when you leave for spring break you are completely free and not bogged down with the thought of returning to the same classes and finals,” said sophomore Magda Pudlo. “I am glad we have a new start and new classes to keep our interests.”

Pudlo is taking a class in Islam, Christianity and Buddism.

“I like the class because the teacher is a dynamic lecturer and the information is interesting because we are studying how interwoven the three religions are, contrary to popular belief,” said Pudlo.

She suggested that other students take the class “because it is a good introduction to the three most worshiped religions of the world, and it can open people’s eyes, and show them that the three religions are interwoven and are respected in their own way.”

Robert Martinez, a junior majoring in biochemistry, is also taking a class he enjoys; Criminology with Jan Mickish.

“Criminology is a great class because it enlightens you on how the media has put a facade up of what really goes on in this world. There are so many unreported white-collar crimes that go on, and in this class I’m realizing how the media or even statistical data has skewed my impression on what is really going on in this country.”

Martinez said he also enjoys the class because it shows students “how the criminal mind works and the ways we can try to prevent crime.”

Despite the good vibes of classes, some students still do not believe in what the university has to offer.

“I think the university doesn’t offer enough CORE, AHUM and SOCS classes in the spring. I also think that the university should try to offer the same classes all year instead of certain quarters because it is tough to register for those classes when you are trying to double major,” said Pudlo.

“It kind of sucks, because you need some classes to graduate, then if you have to take a class available only in fall, you have to wait until it comes around again,” said sophomore John Merritt.

Other students are glad this academic year is almost over. “I’m happy to have gotten through my first year of college and it was great; it can only mean that it will get better from here on out,” said Breanne Mode, a freshman majoring in International Business and Spanish.

Although students are happy at the start of the spring quarter, the nice weather could deter them from getting things done.

“It is a little bit hard to focus, but not much. I just want to do my work, get out of here and begin summer,” Mode said.

Before students can freely enjoy their summer, they have to finish off the last eight weeks of classes.

College life involves finals, stress, and being able to choose classes that will make it a worthwhile experience and then telling your fellow students just how much you loved or hated your choices.
