The DU men’s golf team traveled to Indiana this past weekend to compete in their first tournament of the season: the Wolf Run Invitational hosted by the University of Indiana. The Pioneers shot a three-round 890 to finish 38-over par and 28 strokes behind tournament winner Penn State.

For the first time junior Danny Wax lead the way for Denver with a 54-hole 3-over par 216 for the tournament to finish in a tie for seventh. Junior Chris Gilman was right behind with a five-over par 218, junior Jeff Koprivetz shot a 15-over par 228, senior Scott Tashie recorded a 231 and Kenny Palmer fired a 246.

“Starting off with such a difficult course, it really fine tuned our game so we can turnaround and take what we learned and didn’t do so well at at this course and turn it into better things at other tournaments,” said Wax.

Denver made the NCAA West Regional tournament for the fifth consecutive season last year and continue to look for their first NCAA Championship berth since 1960.

DU lost only Charlie Soule to graduation and look for junior Danny Wax to help lead the way.

“Last season I didn’t get off to a very good start so I am glad I found my game over summer, hopefully this is the beginning of many more good rounds to come,” said Wax.

Women’s tennis:

Junior Annette Aksdal captured the singles title in flight A for DU at the New Mexico Invite this past weekend. Aksdal is now 4-0 on the season after she defeated teammate and Denver junior Mallory Voelker in the final on Sunday.

The Pioneers swept the single titles in all three flights, with sophomore Julia Bauregger winning flight B and freshma Bhavani Tirumurti winning flight C. DU dominated their non-teammates throughout the tourney, going 18-3 in singles play against Colorado, Minnesota and New Mexico.

DU will next be in action Sept. 28-30 when they travel to the San Diego Invite.
