University of Denver students took a break from classes to explore study abroad options by attending the fifth annual Study Abroad Fair last week.

Students literally went from country to country by visiting tables that were set up on the Driscoll Lawn. Faculty members, advisers, program heads and DU students who studied abroad were available at each table to talk to interested students.

Currently, there are 584 students abroad. With 70 percent of students going abroad, DU has the second highest percentage of abroad students of any American university.

Some of the heads of programs had flown in from across the world to answer questions and provide students with brochures and pamphlets containing important information regarding their universities abroad.

Meg Fowler, senior, and Leanna Oen, junior, were among the students who had studied abroad and were happy to talk about their experiences.

“It enhanced my undergraduate experience. I was able to get a native perspective on British studies for my history major,” said Fowler, who studied abroad at the University of York.

While Oen said there was one downside to going to the University of Tubingen in Germany, “I want to go abroad more often.”

Professor Eric Gould, chair of the Cherrington Global Scholars Faculty Committee, described study abroad at DU as “part of the culture.”

Gould summed up the event saying, “It was a roaring success.”

Director of the Study Abroad Program, Carol Fairweather, was pleased with the turn out as well. The high level of interest was evident by the amount of students that came.
